Altai is by far the most beautiful part of Russia I have ever been to. In June I got the chance to spend a week riding and camping in the mountain range where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan come together.
We spent the first night at the base at Bely Bom (Белый Бом), but next day we saddled up the 8 horses that would carry us and our luggage. My ass has never been so sore before, as it was from the riding that week. And my knee was feeling pretty beaten as well. But I wouldn’t miss it for the world. The landscapes were simply incredible. Varied, magnificent and grand. Also we lucked out big time with the weather.
I now understand why those who rely on horses are so in love with them. Horses really are great creatures. Reliable, strong and friendly (except when they throw you off). It is unbelievable that an animal who doesn’t see its hind legs can walk up steep hills, with only rocks and roots to step on carrying an adult human at the same time. And it can go on for hours.
The experience cannot be described, but have a look at some photos;
